Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern access to and use of SciRAG (the “Service”), operated by Matt Powell, trading as Matthew Hume Powell, ABN: 81 773 929 280 (“SciRAG”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you (“you”, “User”) agree to be bound by these Terms. If you are creating an account on behalf of an institution, research group, or other organisation, you confirm you have authority to bind that organisation to these Terms.

1. What SciRAG is

SciRAG is a software platform that helps researchers, supervisors, and OHS officers draft laboratory risk assessments for chemical and biological work, using AI to generate a structured first draft consistent with the Safe Work Australia model codes of practice format. SciRAG is a drafting tool, not a compliance decision or a substitute for professional judgement. Every risk assessment generated by the Service is a draft only and must be independently reviewed, verified, and formally approved by a suitably qualified supervisor or OHS officer before it is relied upon or used to authorise laboratory work. SciRAG is an independent commercial product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of Safe Work Australia or any government agency.

2. Accounts

You must provide accurate registration information, including your institutional affiliation and role. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity under your account. You must notify us promptly of any suspected unauthorised use.

Access levels (Researcher, Supervisor, OHS Officer, and institution- or platform-level administration) determine what you can view and approve within the Service; you agree not to attempt to access functionality or data outside your assigned role.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• use the Service to generate content for laboratory work you do not have a genuine, good-faith intention of having properly reviewed and approved before relying on it;
• upload any Safety Data Sheet, document, or other content you do not have the right to upload and have processed as described in Section 5;
• attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or extract the underlying prompts, knowledge base content, retrieval logic, or other proprietary systems behind the Service;
• use the Service to build a competing product or service;
• misrepresent generated draft content as final, approved, or authoritative without completing the human review step described in Section 1.

4. Your account content

You retain ownership of the information you input (institution details, research context, and similar account content). You grant us a licence to process that information as necessary to operate the Service, including sending it to third-party AI infrastructure providers as described in Section 8.

5. Uploaded Safety Data Sheets and documents

Some features let you upload Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) or other documents for automated parsing and extraction into structured chemical safety data. By uploading any such document, you warrant that:

(a) you have the right to upload the document and to have it processed by the Service, whether because you are the author, the manufacturer, or otherwise hold or have been granted the necessary rights or permission; and

(b) your use of the document through the Service does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party, including the copyright of any chemical manufacturer, importer, or SDS author.

You indemnify SciRAG against any claims, losses, liabilities, and reasonable costs (including legal costs) arising from a breach of this warranty, including any third-party claim that an uploaded document infringed their rights.

We extract and store structured factual data from uploaded documents (such as chemical identifiers, GHS classifications, and physical hazard data). We do not store the original uploaded file, and we do not reproduce narrative text from uploaded documents in generated outputs.

The structured data extracted from your upload of SDS documentation becomes part of a shared chemical knowledge base used to help generate Outputs for all SciRAG accounts, not only yours. This shared knowledge base is limited to objective factual and safety data (such as chemical identifiers, physical properties, GHS classification and hazard statements, and safety guidance we restate in our own words); it does not include the original uploaded document, and it does not identify you, your institution, or the account it came from. By uploading a Safety Data Sheet you agree that the resulting structured data may be retained and used across the Service on this basis.

This shared knowledge base contains only general chemical safety information of this kind. It does not include, and we do not pool or share, the risk assessments you generate, the experiment details you provide, or the specific combinations of chemicals used in your work. That information remains part of your own account content and is not shared with, or visible to, other SciRAG users, institutions, or accounts.

6. Generated outputs

Risk assessments and other documents generated by the Service (“Outputs”) are provided for your use in your laboratory safety processes, subject to the mandatory human review requirement in Section 1. As between you and SciRAG, you may use, adapt, and store Outputs for your institution’s internal laboratory safety purposes. The legal ownership status of AI-generated content under Australian copyright law is currently unsettled where an Output has no identifiable human author; to the extent any copyright does not vest in you automatically, we grant you a permission to use the Output as described in this section. Outputs may draw on factual data from Safe Work Australia, NHMRC, and other regulatory sources, cited by reference; these sources retain their own rights in their original material.

7. No warranty; limitation of liability

The Service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the maximum extent permitted by law:

(a) we do not warrant that Outputs are accurate, complete, or fit for any particular laboratory, chemical, or biological process, and we expressly disclaim any warranty that Outputs comply with your specific institutional, state, or federal work health and safety obligations without independent human review and approval;

(b) SciRAG accepts no liability for any loss, injury, or damage arising from reliance on generated content that has not been reviewed and formally approved in accordance with Section 1; and

(c) to the extent permitted by law, our aggregate liability for any claim arising from these Terms or the Service is limited to the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months preceding the claim, or, while the Service is offered free of charge, to AUD 0.

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts, or modifies any consumer guarantee, right, or remedy conferred on you under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted, or modified.

8. Third-party processing and data handling

Generating and verifying Outputs involves sending your inputs (including uploaded document content and drafted risk assessment text) to Anthropic PBC’s Claude API for processing, under Anthropic’s Commercial Terms of Service. Anthropic does not use this content to train its models and treats it as confidential. Account and Output data is stored using Supabase (PostgreSQL). A separate Privacy Policy will be published covering this in full detail.

9. Intellectual property

The Service, including its software, prompts, knowledge base architecture, and retrieval logic, is the proprietary and confidential property of SciRAG. Nothing in these Terms grants you any right in that underlying technology beyond the ability to use the Service as intended.

10. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account for breach of these Terms, including breach of the warranty in Section 5. You may stop using the Service at any time. Sections 5 through 9 survive termination.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified to registered users.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia, and you submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of its courts.
